Updates: Day 1 (5/16/99)
Day 2 (5/17/99) Day 3 (5/18/99)
Day 4 (5/19/99) |
Pre Race
| 5/12/99 The pictures for the newspaper were shot this morning. The car looks like it is ready to go racing. The performance parts still have not arrived. A replacement battery for my laptop is still in route, hope it makes it tomorrow. We have started packing and 9 days of clothes takes up a great deal of precious cargo space. Looks like somewhere between Memphis and Atlanta we will need to find a laundromat. The mapping software has been installed on the laptop and routes laid out. Back to packing and trying to figure out what we are going to need. 5/10/99 Wayne and I met for lunch to discuss the more important issues. Such as what day and time were leaving, looks like 7 am on Friday the 14 from Jacksonville. I gave Wayne the decals for the car so we could have the car ready for the photo shoot. The only item that is left to buy is a cb for the trip. The performance parts have not shown up and if there not here real soon they will not make it on the car. Speaking of the car, the clutch has been removed and the ATOR Master Mechanic is trying to get it back in the car. Wayne will also install the cd player and aux power plugs. Looks like we will be swinging by the Atlanta offices of Subaru on Friday for a little show and tell, if we get lucky maybe even lunch. We went over the check list of things to pack and seem to be moving in the right direction. I'm bringing the Jimmy Buffett cd's and he is bringing the classic heavy metal ones! Just a side note after a year of planning and 15 years of friendship Wayne lets on he has trouble sleeping in a car. Maybe pure exhaustion will help but we'll take advice from any veteran's that have conquered the One Lap before... Next update probably wed... stay tuned the suprises never stop showing up. 5/7/99 I did a phone interview with Dan Scanlan from the Flordia Times Union ( the local jacksonville paper www.Jacksonville.com ). Looks like we will have an article in the "Wheels" section of the 5/15 Saturday issue. He was waiting on a return call from Brock for some quotes to tie into the article. Dan has been very helpful and we appreciate the work on his part. He is going to shoot some photos of the car on Wednesday so we need to get the decals completed. The Subaru decals were to be applied to the car at 4pm so it should be much closer to looking like a real race car. I picked up the GPS, power inverter and mapping software today. Much thanks to David Leuthold of WWW.DMLTECH.COM for letting us borrow them. I tried the GPS out in the Corvette on the way home, and wow it works great even through the windshield. Just a side note if you need viper parts or work visit www.roeracing.com, as Sean has given donated the web space us. The list of stuff to take is coming along, when you get it down on paper it looks like a great deal of stuff. The digital camera should be available to us soon ( thanks to www.dpcues.com for the use of the camera!) and then we will really start updating the site more frequently. Monday we will actually decide what time were leaving for Michigan. Stay tuned as the start is only 8 days away! 5/1/99: We have about 2 weeks until we head off to Michigan for the start. We have a car!!! We paid the entry fee!!! Wayne and Keith both passes physical exams and eye tests to apply for the SVRA license. After numerous tries the insurance requirements have been fulfilled with Canonball ( not there fault, our insurance agents seemed a little confused with our requests!) The tires and spark plugs have been changed on the car. We have somewhere to stay in Michigan for the start and the finish. The Subaru decals made just for the car are on the way! This week we have to: Make sponsor decals for the car Stay tuned we promise to update these pages more as the trek begins. We will be driving from Florida to Michigan for the start and back after it is over. For anyone keeping track thats about 7200 miles in 10 days. |
